Let’s be honest, the joke about “June-uary” started to wear thin. Then, to add insult to injury, we were in the running to break the record for the coldest June with an average high of 13.5 degrees. One glance at the veggie garden tells us it’s not optimal growing weather for tender little seedlings. The only thing growing and thriving is lettuce. So what’s a person to do? Hit the road and take advantage of all the wonderful local farmers markets this summer!

A great resource for getting started is Vancouver’s Farmers Markets website. Markets, vendors and events are all listed, making it quick and easy to plan your excursions. Granville Island is a mecca for anyone serious about seeking out the best fresh produce, meat, seafood and delectables that Vancouver has to offer. Leave the car at home, grab your reusable canvas shopping bags and anticipate a lovely afternoon of perusing and sampling!

The Granville Island Farmers Market is open Thursday, June 7 until Thursday, October 25th, from 9am to 3pm. This summer, head to the UBC Farm, or more formally known as the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm. It looks like the perfect place to spend a sunny Saturday! The market is open from 9am to 1pm, June through October. They host many events and workshops throughout the year as well. If you are anxious to get out of the city limits, or perhaps searching for a unique way to entertain out of town guests, than the Circle Farm Tours could be for you. The tours are self-guided, and are very easy to navigate. The website and maps are also well laid out, and make the overall experience look inviting.
